Kien Giang Province Creates Favourable Educational Conditions for Khmer Ethnic Minority Students

(CPV) – Over the past several years, the Southern Province of Kien Giang has made great changes in its education and training system to improve intellectual standards for the Khmer ethnic minorities living there, although some difficulties still remain. And now, ethnic minority students from primary to high school will be exempt from any school fees or costs. The Central government has also invested in school construction in ethnic minority areas, and the system of boarding schools has also been expanded. Policies to send ethnic minority students to university and pre-university are being effectively implemented. Ethnic minority people’s awareness about the benefits of academic studying has been improved, contributing to mobilizing ethnic minority students into attending school. According to a report by the Kien Giang Provincial Department of Education and Training, during the 2007-2008 school year, there were 37,391 Khmer ethnic minority students studying in its school system. And students sent to study in universities were provided with VND 400,000 per month. However, 762 students dropped out from school. The main reasons for this problem of drop-outs are the socio-economic difficulties of ethnic minority people.
