Nhan Dan Online – In spite of the State budget austerity, the Government will allocate VND54,770 billion (US$2.6 billion) for programmes and policies related to the country’s ethnic minorities and mountainous regions. This was announced on April 11 at a conference in Hanoi to review the implementation of policies on the region. The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Minister, Chairman of the Committee for Ethnic Minority Affairs (CEMA), Giang Seo Phu. Addressing the gathering, PM Dung urged relevant ministries, agencies and localities to prioritise the policies as key tasks to narrow the development gap between minority groups and the majority of the national population. He asked them to study, review and make necessary adjustments to improve the efficiency of the policies, particularly those related to hunger eradication and poverty reduction, as well as those addressing free migration, preventing plots by hostile forces, and developing strong local political systems. PM Dung also commented on CEMA’s suggestions regarding the allocation of land, housing and safe water for ethnic minority people, the settlement and production of nomadic minorities, and projects on human resources and socio-economic development in the targeted region.
