Border patrol: Homeland Security to address migrant arrivals in Yuma

Arizona Republic Published 10:27 PM EDT Oct 24, 2018 SAN LUIS — Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen will return to the Yuma area Thursday for the second time this year and once again is expected to address the arrival of large numbers of migrant families and minors that made this border area the second-busiest route for their arrival to the United States. Nielsen last visited the border near San Luis, south of Yuma, in April when she proclaimed a “crisis” the spike in the arrival of migrant families and minors here. At that visit, she was joined by Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, who had just deployed the state’s National Guard in response to President Donald Trump’s request.  A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed Thursday’s visit but did not provide additional details about her schedule. A few local leaders said they would attend but were unable to provide more details. Nielsen’s visit comes at the urging of U.S. senators John Kyl and Jeff Flake, both Republicans.
