Soap bosses are planning to dramatically ration episodes if they are forced to scrap filming because cast and crew have to self-isolate. Executives at Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale have drawn up plans to eke out the eight weeks’ worth of instalments they have filmed in advance, in a bid to keep the shows on air for as long as possible in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. EastEnders which currently has four episodes a week could be slashed to two, while Corrie and Emmerdale – both on six weekly outings – could be cut to two or three. But yesterday insiders stressed that if filming was stopped for any length of time – because of cast and crew absence or a wider government lockdown – then it was possible they would simply run out and be forced off air. EastEnders executive producer Jon Sen was yesterday talking to key cast about whether they wanted to plough or go home as filming on other dramas was halted.
