After all that contention, the veritable Joechella worth of talent blessing Biden’s first day in office was an extra nail in the coffin. Four years ago, the inauguration-talent spread was Jackie Evancho, whom you may remember from losing America’s Got Talent in 2010, the Radio City Rockettes, and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, literally anyone who was willing to show up. Now, we have Lady Gaga, J.Lo, and Katy Perry bathing the Washington Monument in fireworks that could be heard miles away. We have rockers, pop stars, R&B singers, country folks, Latin trap heroes. We have Yo-Yo Ma. We have the Boss and Jon Bon Jovi. (Notably, we didn’t have rappers, a glaring miss after Trump buttered up hip-hop heads, issuing pardons to Lil Wayne, Kodak Black, and Death Row Records co-founder Michael “Harry-O” Harris.) As much as Inauguration Day hinted at the apparent end of a painful era, Celebrating America also seemed to say, “People like us!” One hopes … [Read more...] about The Jarring Spectacle of Having an Administration Worth Singing for Again

Autumn doorscapes are the homeware craze you need to know for 2020 – just ask Stacey Solomon & Laura Whitmore
One thing is for sure, Poppy Belle Florals were busy last autumn! “HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW.”
The theater is dying. The theater is dead. Oh, look, it’s reviving; no, it’s dead again. It’s always been that way — yet suddenly, now it isn’t. For the first time since losing its connection to pop culture on one hand and the intellectual traditions of the stage on the other, New York theater seems to be entering a Golden Age — or let’s call it a Second Mini Sorta Golden Age With Caveats. Yes, most commercial shows lose money, schlock and watery revivals wait around every corner, and tickets cost too much. And yet, and yet: Theater is a force in New York as it was not even just a few years ago. Leave aside the fact that Broadway alone took in $1.4 billion last season and is more financially stable than it has been for decades. It’s the experience of theatergoing that has changed most dramatically. We are no longer surprised to encounter an ambitious new play, richly imagined and gorgeously executed, on Broadway, or a dozen … [Read more...] about “HOW LUCKY WE ARE TO BE ALIVE RIGHT NOW.”
Nip Slips, Donald Duck, and Destitute Summers: Britt Daniel Remembers the Best and Worst of Spoon
Most exciting Spoon achievement I mean the biggest achievement is that we’ve made nine records and there ain’t a bad one. I don’t know if that’s the most exciting achievement, but that’s probably the biggest. But there was a time when someone gave me this Donald Duck DVD, and I love Donald Duck. I love how he gets so angry. It just makes my day to see him blow his top. So they gave me a DVD that was all Donald Duck — this is right before the Transference tour — and I was watching all the Donald Ducks, and there was one where he played Radio City Music Hall and I thought to myself, I’m playing Radio City Music Hall next week. Donald Duck played Radio City Music Hall and we’re playing there next week, and we sold it out! … [Read more...] about Nip Slips, Donald Duck, and Destitute Summers: Britt Daniel Remembers the Best and Worst of Spoon
