Gossip Girl (6 seasons, 2007–2012)Connor Paolo (Eric van der Woodsen), Jessica Szohr (Vanessa Abrams), Taylor Momsen (Jenny Humphry)For Momsen: Season 4, episode 10, “Gaslit”; for Paolo and Szohr: Season 4, episode 22, “The Wrong Goodbye” (though all three would return for cameos in the series finale, “New York, I Love You XOXO”)What “happened”: By its fourth season, Gossip Girl had become less a TV show and more a Versace-clad ouroboros willing to shill Vitamin water, ignore plot mechanics, and consume itself in a never-ending cycle of character pairings, each more ridiculous than the ideas you’d find in the average slashfic forum. And in the midst of that chaos, more than a few characters jumped ship.In the season finale, boho-chic troublemaker Vanessa has Dan Humphrey’s novel about the Upper East Side published in secret before decamping to Spain. Somewhere between seasons four and five, perpetually overlooked Eric … [Read more...] about What Happens When Actors Leave High-School-TV Shows?
I needed a better connection to my father than I had, and the one I found was Adam-12, a series that was, in a way, designed with almost insidious perfection as My First Police Show — a smooth transition from kids’ TV into the grown-up world. For one thing, it was only 30 minutes; for another, that half-hour was usually divided among two or three bite-size, easy-to-follow, often amazingly uneventful stories of two white cops on the beat in Los Angeles (a city as exotic as Mars to a child who had never been west of New Jersey). For most of its seven-year run, it aired at 8 p.m., accommodating my bedtime. It was even, literally, the perfect shape for a TV series, by which I mean a show to be viewed on an old-fashioned 4:3 screen. The visual that dominated almost every episode was a two-shot of its main characters: Officer Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) — about 30, cranky, and sour — behind the wheel and, next to him, Officer Jim Reed (Kent McCord) — younger, … [Read more...] about Real-Life Cops, and Me
The Aviator (2004) Several of Leonardo DiCaprio’s best performances subvert or tweak his good looks, encouraging us to see the uglier, messier undercurrents beneath his characters’ appealing surface. Never was that truer than in this Oscar-nominated biopic directed by Martin Scorsese. Leo’s performance as Howard Hughes was hard to fully grasp at the time — he was still shaking off the last vestiges of post-Titanic teen heartthrob — but here was where he really established himself as a major adult actor, bringing to life Hughes’s fiery competitiveness as well as the increasingly erratic behavior that would be his undoing. His Hughes is a towering figure because we know he’s doomed — and, on some level, we sense he does, too — but DiCaprio continually pushes back against the eccentric’s demons, in the process delivering a hypnotic, strangely heroic portrait of ambition in conflict with mental collapse. There’s something … [Read more...] about Every Leonardo DiCaprio Movie Performance, Ranked
