And already the Hall’s slate of 2021 nominations , released Wednesday morning, shows that the new CEO, I Heart Radio vet John Sykes, seems to be cracking some heads together. This is by far the most diverse and adventurous slate of nominees in recent memory. This being the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a lot of the nominees are evidence of the Hall’s deeply imbedded chumminess and insiderism, but the results of Sykes’s interventions are plain: Seven of the 16 nominated acts are women. Like they’re on a river , HBO is rollin’ the first teaser for its Tina Turner documentary, Tina . The documentary is set to take a wide look at the musician’s career , from her beginnings in the late 1950s to her second act in the ’80s, promising new footage and interviews, including with the woman herself. In the teaser, Turner talks about her mother leaving her family when she was young. “It’s all right. You know why?” Turner says over a slow-building, dramatic rendition of “Proud Mary.” “I’m a girl from a cotton field that pulled myself above the destruction and the mistakes. And I’m here for you.” The documentary comes from Oscar- and Emmy-winning directors Dan Lindsay and T.J. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has released its nominee list for the 2021 induction ceremony, with 16 genre-defying nominees making the cut: Mary J. Blige, Kate Bush, Devo, Foo Fighters, the Go-Go’s, Iron Maiden, Jay-Z, Chaka Khan, Carole King, Fela Kuti, LL Cool J, New York Dolls, Rage Against the Machine, Todd Rundgren, Tina Turner, and Dionne Warwick. The short list will be slashed to reveal the official inductees in May, with the annual ceremony taking place “this fall” in Cleveland, Ohio. Of the nominees, several are first-timers. Foo Fighters and Jay-Z are being recognized in their first year of eligibility, while Blige, the Go-Go’s, Kuti, and Warwick are receiving their inaugural nods. Lifetime announced via Twitter that production of Aaliyah: Princess of R&B has halted after its lead, Disney star Zendaya, left, writing, “ We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold. ” Zendaya herself has been tweeting an anonymous source quoted in an E! News exclusive that stated , “ If she is going to do it, she wants to do it right.” (Sneaky.) The movie has had problems from the get-go with vocal opposition from Aaliyah’s family, who wanted the late singer to get the star treatment.
