Photo: CBS After The Good Wife ’s final episode airs, the show will be remembered as an incredibly strong network TV series, and rightly so. But it’s also had its fair share of (inevitable) missteps over the past seven seasons. In advance of Sunday night’s series finale, here’s a journey back through the best and the worst The Good Wife has offered us, through the lens of ten of its best and worst episodes. Obligatory caveat that “best” and “worst” are completely arbitrary, and acknowledgment that season six is heavily represented on the “worst” list. In my defense, season six was very bad . BEST: It tested the bonds between characters. This episode will likely find a spot on every best-of list across the internet, and rightly so. It’s evidence of one of the things The Good Wife did best: building strong relationships between characters, and then putting those characters into situations where those bonds were tested. In exploring Alicia’s choice to create her own … [Read more...] about The Best and Worst of

Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers Are Disney Vloggers Now
Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley are officially the corniest celebrity couple ever. They just gave what might be their first in-person interview as an engaged couple as an exclusive to an unofficial theme-park fan vlog called Chip and Company . In the bizarre video, the NFL-player-slash- Jeopardy! -host and the actress-slash-person sit with empty Mickey Mouse mugs in the middle of a Disney World hotel lobby, like they’re bored kids “playing TV host” while Mom and Dad fight at the check-in desk. Woodley is wearing Minnie Mouse ears on top of a hat that says “DOG DAD,” and Rodgers is in a Star Wars shirt and cargo shorts. Distressing. When asked about her favorite park, Woodley says “my parents loved Epcot because” and mimes a drinking motion. Upsetting. When asked what makes them proud of each other (come through, Disney mommy vlogger with the offbeat questions), Woodley strokes Rodgers’s knee and says, “I’m really proud, baby, of how you make the bed in the morning. … [Read more...] about Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers Are Disney Vloggers Now
Movie Review: The Laughless, Thrilless
Photo: 20th Century Fox The man called McG directs the high-concept rom-com action picture This Means War in a facetious, gut-whomping style that kills both the laughs and the thrills: It is not a distinguished addition to his oeuvre, which includes Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle . Sleek, gay-bar pinups Chris Pine and Tom Hardy play best-bud CIA agents competing for the hand of fair Reese Witherspoon, who strenuously vacillates between the ardent heartthrobs, scrunching up her face and showing off her curvy little twig of a body in low-cut, shorty dresses. The joke is that the lovelorn rivals exploit the Patriot Act and its attendant satellites, surveillance cameras, and slews of eager operatives to spy on the woman and each other — which might have been the springboard for an excellent civil-liberties satire of the last and (alas) current administrations if anyone involved had the wit or courage to get more real with it. One could imagine the heroine’s therapist waterboarded … [Read more...] about Movie Review: The Laughless, Thrilless
The 11 Most Influential Action Heroines of Our Time
Photo-Illustration: Maya Robinson/Vulture and Photos by Paramount Pictures, MGM and Warner Bros. Growing up, I was lucky to witness wildly different, but equally engaging action heroines. I obsessed over the religious and loyal Kira Nerys, played with panache by Nana Visitor from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; the stoic Gina Torres in the purely bonkers Cleopatra 2525 ; the cool, self-assured Lucy Liu in the revamped Charlie’s Angels; and of course, the titular Buffy the Vampire Slayer . After my adolescence, the age of cinematic female badasses ebbed and flowed, but right now, the action heroine is having a bit of a resurgence, offering a more complex crop than ever before. With Atomic Blonde , Charlize Theron adds to an ongoing canon of bruised and bruising women cutting their way to cinematic glory. The women on this list aren’t necessarily my favorites, but, in their own way, each has pushed the cultural conversation forward, continue to inspire adoration (and … [Read more...] about The 11 Most Influential Action Heroines of Our Time
