Robin Williams’ new sitcom The Crazy Ones debuted on CBS last night after uber-hit The Big Bang Theory and did very well for itself, drawing 15.6 million viewers overall . Though it didn’t hold onto to all of Big Bang ’s 18.9 million viewers, it easily beat its NBC competition, the premiere of The Michael J. Fox Show , which pulled in 7.3 million people. The Michael J. Fox Show ’s lead-in, the always ratings-challenged Parks and Recreation , managed only 3.3 million viewers, while CBS’s 9:30 show Two and a Half Men drew 11.54 million people. … [Read more...] about 15.6 Million People Watched Robin Williams’ New Sitcom; Twice As Many As Michael J. ‘The Michael J. Fox Show’ Has Plenty of Potential But Isn’t Quite There Yet
It’s hard to tell from the first episode of a show — or the first two episodes, in the case of The Michael J. Fox Show , which debuts with back-to-back half-hours tonight — if the rest of the series that follow will be any good. Like most new sitcoms, The Michael J. Fox Show will take a handful of episodes to try to find its groove, but the first two episodes hold a lot of promise and feature enough funny moments to drown out the heavy exposition. This is Michael J. Fox’s first regular TV role since he left Spin City to spend time with his family following a Parkinson’s diagnosis in 2000, and this is only his third-ever sitcom, following that show and Family Ties , both critically-acclaimed ratings hits. The charm and likability that propelled Fox to success with those other shows is still on display here, and he’s been maintaining his acting chops since leaving Spin City , with recurring roles on The Good Wife , Rescue Me , Scrubs , and more. He slips easily into his … [Read more...] about ‘The Michael J. Fox Show’ Has Plenty of Potential But Isn’t Quite There Yet
Will It Rain at Coachella?
The annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Annual Festival can usually be counted on to bring the heat, but the weather may be altogether dismal this weekend when the fest ( toplined by Radiohead, The Black Keys, and Dr. Dre with Snoop Dogg) kicks off. According to meteorologists and the L.A. Weekly , Friday and Saturday weather in the Coachella Valley will be partly cloudy with a chance of showers, while strong winds on Friday night may reach speeds of 50 miles per hour. Both days should see lows in the forties and highs in the sixties, though Sunday will be a little warmer. One silver lining in this potential storm cloud: If it does rain, at least it obviates the need for expensive bottled water. And free refills, too! Sources LA Weekly … [Read more...] about Will It Rain at Coachella?
A Few Sincere Suggestions for
Gutfeld on Gutfeld! Photo: Fox News Look, comedy’s a tough business. Creating a new late-night comedy show that really works is a huge, daunting challenge under any circumstance, and that’s still true even if you’re a well-known Fox News host with an established audience, devoted brand following, massive lead-in, and giant cultural and financial safety net if you fail. There has yet to be a really successful, sharp conservative take on the genre, which means there’s not much precedent to model yourself on. So I really feel for Greg Gutfeld, the host of the new Fox News late-night comedy show Gutfeld! If he wants to turn Gutfeld! into a cultural powerhouse, a major late-night destination for conservative voices interested in jokes about how Joe Biden is very old, he’s got a big job ahead of him. In the interest of helping a new voice in comedy, I’d like to offer some suggestions for Gutfeld, based on my viewing of Gutfeld! ’s first episode on Monday, April 5. These … [Read more...] about A Few Sincere Suggestions for
