Once the design process is complete and the sculpture has been approved by the producers, it is broken down into component pieces that can be duplicated and manufactured as individual prosthetic parts that create the effect of wrinkles and folds of older skin. These are the bits and pieces that will be applied to the actors when they arrive on set each day by the show’s team of seven-plus hair and makeup artists. You often hear of the grueling business of heavy-duty makeup application in the movies, whether it’s tales of Jim Carrey undertaking torture-endurance training to get ready for The Grinch or Doug Jones spending more time in the makeup chair than on camera in role after role. You would think adding a couple of decades to your face would be less arduous than transforming into a madcap monster, but the 70-year-old version of Detective Wayne Hays was the work of half a day. “It was basically coming to work, at first, about five hours early,” Ali recalls. … [Read more...] about ’s Old-Man Makeup Was Inspired by

Lauretta: I mean, do we need another “Call Me Maybe”? No! What made it a phenomenon is that it was so unexpected. We didn’t know we needed it, and then we all got up at once and started dancing together like one big, happy, dumb, sugar-loving family. I respect the fact that she has spent the three years since “Call Me Maybe” not trying to re-create it. And now that she’s ready to offer us something new, it isn’t, like, a dubstep record. She knows there’s a formula, hence hiring Swedish mastermind producers Max Martin (of every single catchy pop song) and Peter Svensson (of the Cardigans). Do you know how many times I listened to “Lovefool”? My poor parents. … [Read more...] about Can Carly Rae Jepsen’s New Song Be This Year’s Song of Summer?
Later, Nicky will heartbreakingly admit that he’s not much of a person anymore, but we see that he is human enough to realize he was wrong to speak to Rebecca that way. He finds her later to apologize and gives her a gift: a simple story about Jack building a tree fort when they were kids, of Jack saying the words “tongue and groove, Nicky.” He gives Kevin a gift, too: He lets him fix the leaky roof in his trailer. I know, I know, that’s not really a gift to us normals, but this is a Pearson, so he’s like, really happy to help out. Nicky also promises to go to one AA meeting at the vet center, for Kevin. For Jack’s son. Nicky thinks seeing Jack’s family is too painful for him, but something tells me we’ll be seeing this guy again. … [Read more...] about Recap: Remember the Time
In a quick, funny scene, we learn that Hanzee shot two troopers in Sioux Falls while looking for a young couple. Then, we get to the episode’s second emotional sequence: Karl and Betsy. We learn that Lou was supposed to marry Betsy’s sister Lenore, but Lenore didn’t want to wait for her man to come back from the war, so Lou got “the dud.” After Karl says something typically great about Betsy and Lou, she says, “You’ll look after them, right?” (As my six-year-old likes to say when something is emotional,”I got water in my eyes.”) She knows what we’ve all suspected: She got the sugar pills. She offers some advice — don’t let Lou marry Rhonda Knudsen — and the scene ends with a beautiful hug, a moment of comfort between two people trapped in a story defined by violence. … [Read more...] about Recap: Different Journeys, Same Destination
Prince William's first solo engagement took place in June 2005, when he was 23 years old. Prince Charles's son was invited to join the British and Irish Lions rugby team on their tour to New Zealand, and during his 11-day stay he also represented the Queen at events to commemorate the end of the Second World War. … [Read more...] about Prince George: when will Kate Middleton’s son undertake first solo engagement?
