Amber Ruffin Makes a Compelling Case for White History Month
In case you missed it, Friday’s episode of The Amber Ruffin Show on Peacock rang in the start of Black History Month in an unexpected way: by demanding that we start the tradition of a White History Month, too. Now usually, the White History Month argument is made by racists who refuse to acknowledge the necessity and importance of Black History Month, but in the case of Amber Ruffin, the argument took another direction. In the above segment titled “How Did We Get Here?,” Ruffin recapped the way U.S. history has been rewritten in schools to the point of being “so whitewashed we don’t learn the real story.” Whether it’s erasing the slave-owning history of figures like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln or not drawing the clear line between slavery, the Second Amendment, the KKK, and the police, Ruffin outlined how, thanks to the lobbying efforts of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, American textbooks were written to appeal to the … [Read more...] about Amber Ruffin Makes a Compelling Case for White History Month
The Good, the Bad, and the Overly Proper: Dialect Coaches Rank the American Accents of TV’s Foreign Actors
Photo: HBO, CBS and ABC Speaking with Vulture last year, British actor Dominic West joked that landing his gig on The Affair meant “taking work from honest, hardworking Americans.” Of course, he’s hardly the only expat playing a Yank on TV these days. From The Walking Dead to The Knick to Jessica Jones, there’s a boatload of actors from the U.K. and Down Under currently imitating us on the small screen. We asked in-demand dialect coaches Bob and Claire Corff, who’ve worked with A-listers including Jennifer Lawrence, Naomi Watts, Channing Tatum, and Samuel L. Jackson. “Accents are like a deep habit,” the Corffs explain. Breaking one means retraining the brain and learning a whole new way to consistently sync up … [Read more...] about The Good, the Bad, and the Overly Proper: Dialect Coaches Rank the American Accents of TV’s Foreign Actors

The Weather Station’s ‘Robber’ Is Unshakable
Photo: The Weather Station/YouTube Tamara Lindeman has a voice that begs to be heard: delicate but steady, a breeze that can build toward a gale when the situation demands it. On her latest album as the Weather Station, Ignorance, the Canadian actress turned singer-songwriter puts that voice behind her most urgent message yet. It’s an album-length statement about climate anxiety — not only the rising temperatures that inspired the album but also the feeling of being a human witness to a problem much, much bigger than yourself. It’s not quite a concept album either; Lindeman also sings about broader issues both political and personal alike. But warming centers the project from its opening track, “Robber,” an arresting indictment of systemic issues that sets the tone for the entire album to follow. From the start, “Robber” sounds nothing like the Weather Station, known up to this point as a folk project. Lindeman and her ever-changing band had … [Read more...] about The Weather Station’s ‘Robber’ Is Unshakable
