Photo: AKUSA / Splash News Sofia Coppola landed one unlikely cameo for her fact-based crime caper The Bling Ring , which premiered yesterday at Cannes : Paris Hilton, whose mansion was repeatedly burglarized by the titular teenage thieves nearly five years ago. The heiress appears for a quick moment in a nightclub scene, but more significantly, she lent Coppola her actual house to film in for two weeks so that the director could re-create the burglaries onscreen. “I was really emotional watching it,” Hilton confessed to me last night at the movie’s hot-ticket Nikki Beach after-party. “During some parts of it, I literally had tears in my eyes and I wanted to cry. I knew what happened with the burglaries, but I had never actually seen it — so watching it happen, I was like, ‘Oh my God, this really happened to me. It just made me really angry and upset, and when I see these kids, I want to, like, slap … [Read more...] about Cannes: Paris Hilton Cried While Watching
’The Bling Ring.’ Photo: Merrick Morton/A24 Sofia Coppola debuted her new film The Bling Ring at Cannes today, and contrary to early reports , it no longer begins with a quote from Nicole Richie’s Twitter, though it does close to the tune of Frank Ocean’s “Super Rich Kids,” a fittingly on-the-nose croon about privileged youth getting into trouble. The kids of The Bling Ring aren’t super rich, but they’re adjacent to it, growing up in the San Fernando Valley while mimicking the lifestyle of the Hollywood stars who live just over the mountain. Everything changes, though, when these teens find out just how simple it is to ransack a celebrity’s mansion: All you need to break into Paris Hilton’s unlocked home, for example, is a Google search and some moxie. If some of their victims are famous for doing nothing, what’s wrong with the Bling Ringers tapping into that intoxicating vein with the same ease? Coppola’s fact-based tale starts with Marc (played by newcomer Israel … [Read more...] about Cannes: Hogwarts Would Have Expelled
Photo: Gie Knaeps/Getty Images Truth or Dare is a snapshot of stardom in 1991, before fame was something that existed in people’s pockets. Pop documentaries have surged in the past decade, with many younger artists striving to make their own versions of Truth or Dare . Try as they might, Beyoncé , Taylor Swift , Billie Eilish , Lady Gaga , Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, the Jonas Brothers, Ed Sheeran, Demi Lovato , Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes , and Coldplay can’t quite replicate the novelty of early-’90s Madonna. (Time will tell whether Pink , Nicki Minaj , Rihanna , or Alicia Keys can do any better.) Maybe that’s because Truth or Dare wasn’t initially designed to be so personal. What began as a traditional concert film ripened when director Alek Keshishian observed the seven dancers, two backup singers, and dozens of attendants in Madonna’s retinue. What came next was less a celebrity-branding ploy than an organic peek behind the Blond Ambition Tour’s … [Read more...] about The Oral History of Madonna’s
