That early investment really paid well for MJ. Photo: Dave Hogan/Getty Images For more than two decades, the world’s largest music-publishing catalogue was split down the middle in ownership between Sony and Michael Jackson. But as of this month, that power structure will undergo a drastic change: Sony has agreed to buy out the Michael Jackson estate’s half of Sony/ATV Music Publishing for $750 million. In one of the most notorious deals in music history, Jackson famously purchased ATV Publishing for more than $41.5 million in 1985 — outbidding his friend Paul McCartney to acquire a significant amount of the Beatles publishing catalogue — and sold half of ATV’s shares to Sony a decade later to form Sony/ATV. But when Jackson died, in 2009, he reportedly left his estate more than $500 million in debt (which the estate has largely resolved thanks in part to posthumous success ). Last September, reports circulated that one side was looking to buy out the other after Sony … [Read more...] about Sony Will Buy Out Michael Jackson’s Half of Sony/ATV Publishing, Take Sole Ownership of His Beatles Catalogue

THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES - Abbi Jacobson as “Katie Mitchell”. Cr: ©2021 SPAI. All Rights Reserved. Photo: Netflix If Mike Rianda warms to you, he’ll start laughing at you. His actors mention this, but I learn it for myself on a Zoom call in mid-April, just a few weeks before the 37-year-old’s directorial debut, The Mitchells vs. the Machines , hits Netflix. The animator has what might most easily be described as a chortle, but such a simplification doesn’t even begin to skim the surface of his breathy, high-pitched chuckle. It strikes at random, especially mid-sentence, like when he’s telling me about the likelihood of technology taking over our lives and suddenly emits the loudest, most enthusiastic laugh I’ve heard during the work-from-home era (and possibly beyond). It’s infectious, deeply warm, and maybe even a little chaotic — and it’s just what you’d expect from an artist who has spent the past decade creating some of animation’s most compellingly earnest, … [Read more...] about Director Mike Rianda Wants to Make You Laugh (and Call Your Mom)
The unprecedented season was good for Chloé Zhao and Anthony Hopkins, and less kind to Netflix films like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom . Photo: From Left: Courtesy of Netflix, Getty Images, Courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics From the very beginning, it was apparent that this year’s Oscars were shaping up to be the weirdest ones we’d ever seen . For one, very few of the films in competition would be seen in actual movie theaters — instead, the field was given over to streaming and VOD releases. Awards campaigns, which have evolved into multimillion-dollar charm offenses , would happen only virtually, or not at all. Society itself had been shaken since the last ceremony, with a deadly pandemic, massive protests in support of racial justice, and an attempted insurrection in the nation’s capital. Oh, and the Oscars would be taking place not on their usual February date, but in April. Now that the 2021 Oscars are in the books, it’s time to take stock. How did all this massive … [Read more...] about What Did We Learn From This Strange Oscars Season?

Photo: Courtesy of Netflix Katie Mitchell (Abbi Jacobson), the protagonist of the year’s best animated movie so far , The Mitchells vs. the Machines , loves movies. Her goal in life is to become a filmmaker, and she has spent her childhood making movies that are chock-full of references and homages to the pop culture she admires. So it should be no surprise that the Netflix film itself is absolutely full of Easter eggs and shout-outs to all sorts of genre flicks that inspired The Mitchells vs. the Machines in the first place. While Katie and the rest of the Mitchells — Rick (Danny McBride), Linda (Maya Rudolph), and Aaron ( Mike Rianda , who also directed the movie) — embarked on a cinematic journey to stop a potentially world-ending machine uprising, Vulture was on a quest to track down as many pop-culture references as we could find. Here, what to watch for. … [Read more...] about Every Pop-Culture Easter Egg in
