Photo: Myles Aronowitz/Netflix When Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad first signed on to score Netflix’s Luke Cage , they didn’t consider how the show would consume their day-to-day lives. The two are legendary — Muhammad was a founding member of A Tribe Called Quest, and the prolific Younge has an output that defies categorization. They quickly realized all future plans needed to be shelved. It wasn’t solely that the score was overly consuming — though Younge concedes, “We had to give up our lives as artists to dedicate ourselves wholly to this score” — but more that Younge and Muhammad realized they had a chance to create a score that could define the TV series. “We raised the bar and created something that is timeless,” professes Muhammad. Over coffee at the Cut restaurant in the recently opened Four Seasons Downtown in New York City, Vulture spoke with the two musicians about creating the score, the lack of opportunities … [Read more...] about The Musicians Behind

Photo: Eric McCandless/ABC American Idol has closed the book on the beautiful mess that is auditions , meaning it’s time to head to Hollywood — and check in on Claudia Conway , who earned her very own golden ticket a few weeks ago . Claudia debuted a new brown-haired look in Hollywood, which she called “a little change,” but judge Katy Perry dubbed “a transformation.” “I’ve been trying to establish my own identity for a while,” she added in a confessional, before her performance of Bishop Briggs’s “River.” Claudia’s rendition earned a standing ovation from her mother Kellyanne, who, yes, was in the audience supporting her daughter (or just saving face on live TV after allegedly leaking a topless photo of her daughter in January). Host Ryan Seacrest alluded to Kellyanne as “no stranger to voting, something fundamental to the Idol process,” which is certainly a way to spin working for the Trump administration. “It is okay for you to have different views than the people … [Read more...] about Claudia Conway Brought Her Mom and a New Look to Her
The Better Call Saul star spent nearly two years training with the John Wick team to go full Keanu. Photo: Courtesy of Universal Pictures Before Bob Odenkirk ever contemplated undergoing an extreme physical makeover, transforming from TV’s most morally lax/physically wimpy criminal attorney into a convincing movie ass-kicker, the Better Call Saul star experienced three very real brushes with life-threatening peril. Odenkirk says he was inspired to concoct a relentless, crisply homicidal inversion of the kind of guy he’s known for playing in Nobody (out Friday) — a normcore suburban dad whose failure to protect his family during a home-invasion robbery unlocks a hidden and apparently limitless capacity for mayhem and ultraviolence — after his own home was twice burglarized, and on the heels of “an incident in Chicago” during which (the actor will only cryptically divulge), “I had a gun held to my head at 2 a.m. and I gave all my cash to this person.” “I think most … [Read more...] about How Bob Odenkirk Actually Transformed Into a Badass for the Ass-Kicking
Photo-Illustration: Vulture; Photos: DreamWorks/Netflix We’ve spent a lot of time this week talking about character actors — what defines them, how to recognize them, how and why they excel. But character actors don’t always stay character actors forever. The chaos of fame is indeed a ladder — a series of them, actually — and with the exception of the select few A-listers who had stardom thrust upon them from the very beginning, the careers of actors and actresses must often travel a long and winding road to the top. For many character actors, they reach a point where they cease to buttress the story of the main attractions and become an attraction all to themselves. They either find a way to graduate to leading roles, or they become so famous in their own signature, scene-stealing parts that they cease to meet the character-actor criteria. The pathways by which character actors leap free of the gravity of their trappings are different and varied for each, but to get a better … [Read more...] about Hollywood’s Six Pathways from Supporting Parts to Stardom
