James – Apart from them, I found it quite disappointing. A couple of weeks ago I found the show absolutely amazing with the costumes and the music. What stuff did you want to talk about with them, but couldn’t? The absence of the drone war is conspicuous.really going to do in Syria. I would have loved to film those detailed discussions and debates about it. They weren’t going to let us. Because all that stuff happens in the Situation Room, they weren’t going to let us do that. But, you know, because I’d done a previous project about the CIA and the hunt for bin Laden, I’m kind of used to operating in these kind of worlds. I didn’t want to film to be a foreign-policy film or a film about these issues. I wanted it to be an experiential film about the emotions at play in these jobs during what I thought would be a momentous year. Which, it turns out, it was. A million years ago, I used to work at a comedy theater. Throughout my career, I’ve worked at a few. I landed this job as an actor/writer/improviser at this place after having a full-time job writing and performing comedy for, like, five years. I wasn’t green, but none of the jobs I had had were in this city, so to a lot of people I seemed to come out of nowhere. It was the best learning experience and I made some real friends for life while I was there. There was a bar across the street we would drink at almost every night. At that bar, there was a Black bouncer who would always be there, ready to talk shit and give out hugs. He would always tell me how proud he was of me. It was a magical time.
